Edge-based solution for battery energy management system: Investigating the integration capability into the building automation system

Recently, photovoltaic (PV) with energy storage systems (ESS) have been widely adopted in buildings to overcome growing power demands and earn financial benefits. The overall cost can be optimized by combining a well-sized hybrid PV/ESS system an efficient management (EMS). Generally, EMS is implemented within the functions of Building Automation System (BAS). However, due its limited computing resources, BAS cannot handle complex algorithms that aim optimize use real-time under different operating conditions. Furthermore, islanding building's local network maximize PV share represents challenging task potential technical risks. In this context, article addresses improved approach based on upgrading data analytics capability means edge technology. communicates low-level controller using serial communication protocol. Taking advantage high ability device, optimization-based implemented. Different testing scenarios carried out real prototype weather conditions, results show implementation feasibility performance such advanced for building resources. It has also proven feasible advantageous operate island mode while ensuring safety. Additionally, estimated saving improvement 6.23 % achieved compared classical rule-based EMS, better ESS constraints fulfillment.
